81 GREYHOUND ADOPTION GROUPS HAVE NOW COME OUT

IN OPPOSITION TO PROPOSED BAN ON GREYHOUND RACING

Number of Greyhound Adoption Groups Urging the Public to Vote

NO on Amendment 13 Doubles, but Their Perspective

Remains Largely Unreported in the Media

August 21, 2018 ​– 81 Greyhound adoption groups from around the U.S. and Canada, including 16 groups in Florida, have now come out publicly against the proposed ban on Florida Greyhound racing, more than doubling the number of Greyhound adoption groups which are supporting racing since the coalition Greyhound Adopters for Racing originally announced this phenomenon. All 81 groups are urging Florida voters to vote NO on proposed Amendment 13, which would effectively ban professional Greyhound racing in Florida, if the measure gets past the recent judicial finding that the Amendment language is “outright trickeration.”

“The contrast couldn’t be more stark,” said Dr. Jennifer Ng, the veterinarian and Greyhound adoption volunteer who is president of the coalition. “The intentionally misnamed ‘Protect Dogs’ organization has the money and support of extremist national animal rights organizations, politicians, minor celebrities, a few civic organizations and businesses, and, of all people, several polo players. It’s a safe bet that most of these supporters have never touched a racing Greyhound, much less been in a racing kennel or experienced Greyhounds coming off the track and into pet homes. Eighty-one adoption groups and the hundreds of Greyhound adoption volunteers they represent have extensive experience with racing Greyhounds right off the track, and are undisputedly Greyhound welfare experts. That so many Greyhound adoption groups from around the country, who know racing Greyhounds and deal with them every day of the year, would come out in opposition to banning Greyhound racing, speaks volumes about whether racing is ‘cruel’ or ‘inhumane’ to the dogs as the animal rights activists and their uninformed supporters claim,” she said. “Many of these groups rehome Florida racing Greyhounds right off the track, and they know from seeing, touching

and working with the Greyhounds that they are well cared for while racing.”

The story remains the most underreported aspect of the media’s coverage of the pro-racing versus anti-racing debate in Florida and other states. Most of the reportage simply trots out the usual spokespersons with the usual quotes, while leaving the unique and unbiased perspective of the mainstream Greyhound adoption community, which doesn’t fit the traditional narrative, largely unreported.
