Over 60 Greyhound adoption groups oppose proposed Amendment 13

61 GREYHOUND ADOPTION GROUPS COME OUT IN OPPOSITION TO PROPOSED BAN ON GREYHOUND RACING

Greyhound Adoption Groups in Florida and Around the U.S. and Canada Urge the Public to Vote NO on Amendment 13

August 1, 2018​ — Sixty-one Greyhound adoption groups from around the U.S. and Canada, including 14 in Florida, have publicly come out against the proposed ban on Florida Greyhound racing, the coalition Greyhound Adopters for Racing announced today. All 61 groups are urging Florida voters to vote NO on proposed Amendment 13, which would effectively ban professional Greyhound racing in Florida, when they go to the polls in November.

“The misnamed anti-racing group ‘Protect Dogs’ is well-funded, largely by extremist national animal rights organizations, and most of its endorsements come from politicians, political organizations and general animal rescue groups, none of whom have contact with racing Greyhounds,” said Dr. Jennifer Ng, the South Carolina veterinarian who is president of the coalition. “They were just given a lot of money by the Doris Day Animal League, which operates under the direction of the poorly rated Humane Society of the United States. But no amount of money can buy the Greyhound expertise of Greyhound adoption groups, which are on the frontlines of Greyhound welfare. That so many Greyhound adoption groups from around the country, who know racing Greyhounds and deal with them every day of the year, would come out in support of Greyhound racing, speaks volumes about whether racing is ‘cruel’ or ‘inhumane’ to the dogs as the animal rights activists claim,” she said. “Many of these groups rehome Florida racing Greyhounds right off the track, and they know from seeing, touching and working with the Greyhounds that they are well cared for while racing.”

This large number of Greyhound adoption groups, representing hundreds of grassroots adoption volunteers in the U.S. and Canada, reflects the breadth and depth of support for Greyhound racing in the adoption community. Greyhound Adopters for Racing now has over 1,600 members.
